Garden design is planting-led: it starts with soil, sun and exposure, then chooses species and structure that will look considered in year three, not just at planting day.

A garden is a living system, not a fixed layout.

It's easy to design a garden that looks right at planting day and starts falling apart within a year — the wrong species in the wrong aspect will not thank you for good intentions. Garden design differs from hard landscaping in exactly this way: a paved patio behaves the same in year ten as it did in week one, but a planting plan is either working with a site's soil, sun and exposure or it is fighting them, and that fight shows up as replacement cost, dieback and disappointing growth long after the invoice is paid.

The species list that most people start with — pulled from a photo, a Pinterest board or a neighbour's garden — is the last decision in a properly run design process, not the first. What comes first is an honest read of what the site actually offers: how much direct sun a bed gets across the seasons, what the soil is doing underneath it, how exposed it is to wind, salt or frost, and how much ongoing maintenance the household genuinely intends to do. Species selection, structure and seasonal interest all get layered on top of those answers.

Sun & aspect

North-facing banks, shaded south fences and morning-only light each suit a different planting palette, and a species that thrives in one aspect can sulk or fail entirely thirty metres away in another. Map sun across the seasons, not just at the time of a single site visit.

Soil

Clay, sandy or amended soil changes both species choice and how much preparation the bed needs before planting begins. Heavy clay that holds water after rain rules out species that need free-draining conditions, regardless of how well they'd otherwise suit the site.

Exposure

Wind, salt and frost exposure determine which otherwise-suitable species will actually establish, and this is one of the most commonly underestimated factors on open or elevated sections. A species that performs well in a sheltered suburb can fail outright on an exposed coastal or hilltop site.

Maintenance appetite

A garden should be designed for the upkeep you will realistically do, not the upkeep a show garden implies. A high-input perennial border looks spectacular in photographs and becomes a source of guilt within eighteen months if nobody has the time to actually maintain it.

Exposed coastal bank

Salt and wind tolerance rule most decisions; the plan leads with hardy coastal natives and reserves softer species for sheltered pockets close to the house. Establishment watering is planned more generously than usual, since salt-affected, free-draining coastal soil dries out faster than an inland equivalent.

Shaded, low-maintenance courtyard

Limited light and a low-upkeep brief point toward structural evergreen planting with minimal seasonal change, rather than a high-colour perennial mix that would need constant deadheading and division. Texture and form carry visual interest instead of flower colour.

05 · Before planting begins

Set the garden up to establish well.

  • Have soil assessed if drainage or fertility is uncertain, especially on new-build sites with disturbed or compacted topsoil.
  • Confirm a realistic maintenance routine before committing to a high-input palette, and be honest about who will actually do it.
  • Plan establishment watering for at least one full dry season, not just the first few weeks after planting.
  • Sequence planting after hardscape and irrigation are in, not before, so new beds aren't disturbed by later trades.

Garden design: common questions

How long does it take for a new garden to look established?

It depends heavily on plant size at installation and density, but most new plantings take one to three growing seasons to fill out and stop looking sparse, even when correctly prepared and watered.

Should I test my soil before choosing plants?

It's worth doing if drainage or fertility is at all uncertain, particularly on new-build sites where topsoil has often been disturbed, stripped or compacted during construction — a species list built on assumed soil conditions is a common cause of early failure.

Can I mix natives and exotics in the same garden design?

Yes, and many successful gardens do — the choice is less about a strict native-versus-exotic rule and more about matching each species to the specific aspect, soil and exposure of the bed it's going into.
