Garden drainage: start with the symptom, not the solution.

Garden drainage is one of the few areas of landscaping where the instinctive fix — dig a trench, lay a pipe — is very often not the actual solution to the visible problem. Water sitting on the surface after rain, a lawn that stays boggy for days, or a damp patch creeping up a foundation wall are all symptoms, and each one can be caused by more than one underlying mechanism. Standing water is often a grading problem, where the ground simply has nowhere to fall to, not a lack of a pipe. A boggy lawn is frequently a soil structure or compaction problem, where the water isn't moving through the soil profile at all, rather than a shortage of drains. Installing a drain without first understanding which of these is actually happening can mask a symptom while leaving the underlying cause untouched — or, in some cases, make it worse.

Standing water after rain

Often a grading issue — water has nowhere to fall to. Check finished levels before assuming a drain is needed; in many cases a modest regrade solves what looks like a drainage problem for a fraction of the cost of new pipework.

Persistently boggy lawn

Frequently a soil structure or compaction issue rather than a lack of drains — clay soils and compacted subgrade both cause this. Adding a pipe drain without addressing soil structure often leaves the surrounding lawn just as waterlogged as before.

Water against the house

Usually a grading or downpipe discharge issue close to the foundation, which should be treated as a priority safety item given the potential for damage to the structure if left unresolved over time.

Slow-draining garden beds

Often poor soil structure or a perched water table; adding drainage without improving soil may not fully resolve it, since plant roots still have to cope with the compacted or poorly structured soil the water was struggling to move through.

Recurring puddles in the same spot every time

A consistent, repeatable puddle location is a strong sign of a genuine low point in the finished levels rather than a general soil problem, and is one of the easier drainage issues to diagnose and fix precisely for that reason.

04 · Worked scenarios

Two drainage problems.

New paving trapping water against a fence line

Investigation shows the paving was laid with a fall toward the fence rather than away from it — the fix is regrading, not a new drain, and the original installer's level-setting error is the real cause rather than any inherent site drainage issue.

Clay-soil lawn that stays wet for days

Soil structure and subgrade compaction are the primary cause; a combination of aeration, soil improvement and a shallow soakage trench resolves it more effectively than pipe drainage alone, since the water was never moving fast enough through the soil to reach a pipe in the first place.

How do I tell if my drainage problem is grading or soil structure?

Watch where water sits: if it pools in a consistent low spot with visible fall around it, that points to grading; if the whole area stays soggy and slow to dry even where levels look reasonable, that points more toward soil compaction or structure.

Can I just add a soakage pit without a full investigation?

It's risky on clay or poorly-draining soil, since soakage relies on the surrounding soil actually being able to absorb the water — installing one without confirming soil type can mean it simply doesn't work.

Is standing water near my house always a serious problem?

It should always be treated as a priority to investigate, even if it looks minor, because water sitting against a foundation over time carries a real risk of damage that's far more expensive to fix than the original drainage issue.

Do I need council approval to install garden drainage?

It depends on where the drainage discharges to and the scale of the work — connecting to stormwater infrastructure or working near a boundary can involve council requirements, so this is worth confirming before work begins rather than after.
