Water behind a wall is a load the wall wasn't designed to carry.
A retaining wall is typically engineered to resist the pressure of retained soil — not the additional hydrostatic pressure of water saturating that soil and pressing against the wall as well. When drainage behind a wall is skipped or under-specified, water has nowhere to go, saturates the backfill, adds significant additional pressure, and over time this is one of the most common mechanisms behind bulging, leaning or outright collapse of retaining structures that were otherwise reasonably built.
The fix is not complicated in principle — free-draining backfill material, a drainage coil at the base directing water to a lawful outlet, and a geotextile filter layer to stop fines clogging the system over time — but it has to actually be specified and installed correctly, not assumed as automatically included in a wall quote.

A granular, free-draining aggregate immediately behind the wall lets water move down to the drainage coil instead of saturating the retained soil against the wall face.
Drainage coil
A perforated pipe laid along the base of the wall collects water moving through the backfill and carries it to a defined discharge point rather than letting it pool at the footing.
Geotextile filter fabric
Wrapping the drainage coil and backfill zone in geotextile fabric stops fine soil particles migrating into and eventually clogging the drainage system over the wall's life.
Lawful discharge point
Drainage coil needs to end somewhere legally and functionally appropriate — connecting to an inadequate system or simply daylighting onto a neighbour's property creates a new problem instead of solving the original one.

04 · Before backfilling a wall
Confirm drainage before it's covered over.
- Confirm the backfill material specified is genuinely free-draining, not reused on-site soil.
- Check drainage coil is specified along the full base of the wall, not just at isolated points.
- Confirm geotextile filter fabric is included to prevent long-term clogging.
- Verify the discharge point is lawful and has capacity for the water it will actually carry.
- Get drainage inspected before backfilling proceeds — this is far easier to fix before it's covered than after.
Retaining wall drainage: common questions
Can I add drainage to an existing wall that doesn't have it?
Sometimes, depending on the wall type and access, but retrofitting drainage behind an existing wall is more invasive and costly than installing it correctly during original construction.
Does every retaining wall need a drainage coil?
Very low, short garden walls in genuinely free-draining ground may need less provision, but as a general rule any wall retaining a meaningful height of soil should have a deliberately designed drainage path, not an assumed one.
What are the early warning signs of a drainage problem behind a wall?
Bulging or leaning at the face, damp patches or efflorescence (white mineral deposits) on the wall surface, and water pooling at the base after rain are all worth investigating promptly.
