Levels & drainage
Map existing falls before choosing finished levels. A deck, a new path and a retaining wall all change where water goes next, and a decision made for one element can quietly break drainage for another if nobody has checked the wider picture first. Get the overall fall of the site agreed before any single feature's level is locked in.
Access & staging
Machinery size, gate widths and a place to store materials shape both programme and price before any design decision is made. A site that can take a full-size digger costs meaningfully less to earthwork than one reachable only through a narrow side gate, and that constraint should inform the design rather than be discovered once work has already started.
Sequencing
Earthworks, drainage and structural work happen first; planting and finishing surfaces happen last. Reversing this order causes rework — turf laid before a retaining wall goes in gets driven over by machinery, and paving laid before drainage is resolved often has to be lifted and relaid at extra cost.
Interfaces
Where hard landscaping meets the house, boundary, driveway or existing trees is where most disputes and defects originate. Three sites, three different scopes.
Flat 400m² suburban section
Lawn removal, a paved entertaining area, boundary planting and a new path. Access is good, no retaining is required, and the finished levels are already close to workable. Sequencing is simple: drainage checks first, then hardscape, then planting last so it isn't damaged by later trades.
Sloping 650m² section with an existing deck
A retaining wall is needed to create usable flat area, drainage must be resolved before paving goes down, and access is restricted to a single side gate — machinery is smaller and slower, which changes both programme and price. The existing deck also needs its footings checked against the new finished levels before anything else is priced.
Established 800m² section with mature trees
The plan has to work around root protection zones and existing canopy shade rather than a blank slate, which limits where earthworks and new hard surfaces can go. A whole-site read here is less about maximising space and more about sequencing new work so it doesn't damage what is already worth keeping.
05 · Before you request quotes
A practical pre-brief checklist.
- Confirm approximate finished levels and where water currently flows off the site, ideally checked during or just after rain.
- Note gate widths, driveway access and any overhead or underground services that could constrain machinery or excavation.
- List every element in scope — even ones you plan to phase later — so contractors are quoting the same job on the same assumptions.
- Decide which decisions (materials, planting palette) you want input on vs. which you have already made, so quotes aren't wasted on options you won't choose.
- Ask each contractor how their portion of the work sequences against the others, not just what their own portion costs.
Whole-site landscaping: common questions
Do I need a landscape designer to plan a whole site, or can I do this myself?
For a straightforward flat section with one or two elements, a clear sketch and an honest sequencing conversation with your contractor is often enough. Sites with significant slope, multiple structural elements or several competing priorities usually benefit from a designer resolving the layout on paper first, where changes cost nothing, rather than on site.
How much does whole-site planning add to the project timeline?

Can a whole-site plan be built in stages over several years?
