"Sloping section" covers everything from a gentle backyard fall to a near-unbuildable bank, and the right strategy changes completely across that range. Start by measuring the actual gradient, not guessing at it.

The gradient decides the strategy before any design begins.

A section that falls one metre over ten metres behaves nothing like one that falls one metre over three — yet both get called a sloping section in casual conversation. The first is a gentle grade that lawn, paving and light terracing can handle without much structural intervention. The second is close to unworkable without significant retaining, engineered access and probably a geotechnical opinion before anything else is decided.

Getting an actual measurement — even a rough one, using a level and a tape measure over a known distance — before comparing strategies avoids designing for the wrong slope entirely. This guide groups strategies by gradient band, because that is what actually predicts which approach is realistic.

01 · Match the strategy to the gradient

Three gradient bands, three different starting strategies.

These are general bands to guide thinking, not fixed engineering thresholds — every site still needs its own assessment.

Gentle (roughly 1:10 or flatter)

Often workable with grading alone — regrading for drainage falls, light terracing with garden edging rather than structural retaining, and standard lawn or paving.

Moderate (roughly 1:10 to 1:4)

Usually needs terracing with retaining walls to create genuinely flat usable areas, plus a deliberate drainage strategy for water moving across and down the slope.

Steep (steeper than roughly 1:4)

Access for machinery becomes a real constraint, retaining is likely engineered rather than DIY-scale, and a geotechnical assessment is worth getting before any design work is committed to.

Access, regardless of band

Machinery access — or the lack of it — often has as much impact on cost and method as the gradient itself, especially on narrower urban sections.

03 · Two worked slopes

Different gradients, different plans.

Gentle backyard fall toward a rear fence

A roughly 1:12 grade across a suburban backyard is regraded with subtle terracing using low garden edging rather than structural walls, keeping drainage falls working with the existing slope instead of against it.

Steep bank behind a hillside home

A slope closer to 1:3 rules out casual DIY terracing. The realistic plan is an engineered retaining structure creating one or two genuinely flat terraces, with the rest of the bank left in stabilising planting rather than fully reshaped.

04 · Before committing to a strategy

Confirm these before pricing the project.

  • Get an actual gradient measurement across the relevant part of the section, not a visual guess.
  • Assess machinery access separately from gradient — a moderate slope with poor access can cost more than a gentler slope with good access.
  • Establish where water currently flows across and off the slope before finalising any regrading plan.
  • Get a geotechnical opinion for anything approaching the steep end of the range before committing to a design.

Landscaping a sloping section: common questions

How do I roughly measure my slope's gradient?

Use a spirit level and a straight board or string line over a known horizontal distance to measure the vertical drop, then express it as a ratio — for example, a 1m drop over 8m horizontal is roughly a 1:8 gradient.

Can I terrace a steep slope myself to save on engineering?

For genuinely steep ground this is not advisable — retaining walls on steep sites carry real structural and safety consequences if underspecified, and engineering input is worth the cost.

Does a sloping section always need retaining walls?

No — gentle slopes can often be handled with regrading and drainage alone, reserving retaining for the specific zones that need a genuinely flat, usable area.
