Low-maintenance landscaping: structural changes, not just plant choice.

Choosing easier plants is one lever, but it's a smaller one than most people assume. Real reductions in ongoing maintenance mostly come from structural decisions made before a single plant goes in.

The biggest maintenance reductions happen at the layout stage, not the plant list stage.

"Low maintenance" is usually approached as a plant selection exercise — swap high-input species for hardier ones — but the layout and material decisions underneath the planting often matter more. The ratio of hardscape to garden bed, whether irrigation is automated or manual, how mulch is used to suppress weeds, and whether a lawn area is even the right choice for the household's actual habits all have a bigger cumulative effect on ongoing time and cost than species selection alone.

Increasing paved, decked or gravelled area relative to garden bed directly reduces weeding, mowing and planting maintenance — the trade-off is less greenery, which needs weighing against the household's priorities.

Mulch strategy

A properly maintained mulch layer suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture and reduces watering frequency — but it needs topping up periodically to keep performing, which is itself a (much lighter) maintenance task.

Irrigation automation

Automated irrigation removes the manual watering task entirely for established zones, at the cost of installation and occasional system maintenance — a worthwhile trade for many households.

Lawn area sizing

Lawn is one of the highest ongoing-maintenance elements per square metre in most gardens — right-sizing it to how it's actually used, rather than defaulting to a large lawn, is one of the most effective single changes available.

03 · Before finalising a low-maintenance plan

Address structure before plant selection.

  • Review the hardscape-to-garden ratio against how much time you're realistically willing to spend on upkeep.
  • Plan a mulch strategy across garden beds rather than leaving bare soil exposed to weed growth.
  • Consider automated irrigation for garden beds, even if lawn areas are watered manually or not at all.
  • Right-size lawn area to actual use before defaulting to a large lawn by habit.
  • Choose species genuinely suited to the site's sun, soil and exposure — a mismatched "low-maintenance" species can still need constant attention.

Low-maintenance landscaping: common questions

Is artificial turf a genuine low-maintenance lawn alternative?

It removes mowing and watering entirely, but it's not maintenance-free — it needs occasional cleaning and can perform poorly underfoot in direct summer heat, so it suits some briefs better than others.

Does low-maintenance mean low-cost?

Not necessarily — some low-maintenance strategies (automated irrigation, quality mulch, hardscape) have a higher upfront cost in exchange for lower ongoing time and cost, which is a genuine trade-off worth weighing rather than assuming lower maintenance is always cheaper.

Can an existing high-maintenance garden be converted without starting over?

Often yes, in stages — increasing mulch coverage, right-sizing lawn area and gradually replacing the highest-maintenance zones tend to have more impact than a single species swap across the whole garden.
