Harbour-edge and open-coast exposure changes fixings, timber treatment and whether composite decking earns back its higher material cost — but plenty of Auckland sites sit far enough inland that this barely matters.
Where the water goes once it hits the surface
Both a deck substructure and a patio base course need to shed water without sending it toward a neighbour's boundary or an existing overland flow path — worth confirming before the base goes in, not after.

A tight side yard forced staged construction
The living area sat well above the garden — enough that a patio would have needed significant fill to work — while the only access to the back of the section was a side yard too narrow for anything but small equipment. The build went ahead as a timber deck with an engineered substructure, staged in sections with materials hand-carried for the final run, and a balustrade specified once the confirmed height above ground made it a building-code requirement rather than an optional extra.
