Coastal exposure is usually discussed as a planting problem — which species tolerate salt — but it affects fixings, hardware and finishes just as much. Sites within roughly a few hundred metres of open coast, or exposed to onshore winds carrying salt spray further inland, are commonly treated as a higher corrosion category, which changes what grade of fixings, hinges and metal hardware are appropriate. Standard-grade steel and some aluminium finishes can visibly corrode faster in this environment than the same products would inland.
Wind and sandy, free-draining soil compound the problem: wind accelerates salt deposition onto foliage and surfaces, and free-draining sandy soil sheds both water and nutrients quickly, meaning irrigation and soil improvement decisions matter more here than on a typical inland section.

Salt spray
Salt-tolerant planting is the well-known response, but salt spray also pushes toward higher-grade (often stainless) fixings and coated or corrosion-resistant hardware on any structure close to the coast.
Wind exposure
Sustained onshore wind both stresses plants directly and carries salt further inland than still conditions would, meaning windbreak planting or screening often needs to be established before more delicate species are introduced.
Sandy, free-draining soil
Water and nutrients move through sandy coastal soil quickly, which favours drought-tolerant species and points toward more deliberate soil improvement or mulching than an inland clay site would need.
Dune or erosion-prone ground
Sites close to dunes or active coastal erosion zones may have specific setback or planting rules aimed at stabilisation — this is a council question, not just a design preference.

Full salt and wind exposure rules out anything but the hardiest coastal-tolerant planting on the seaward side; the plan leads with a tough windbreak layer and reserves softer species for pockets sheltered behind it, with stainless-grade fixings specified for any structure in that zone.
Sheltered coastal-suburb section a few streets back
Reduced direct exposure (buildings and other planting break the wind) widens the viable species list considerably, though sandy soil and periodic salt-laden wind events still favour more drought-tolerant choices than an equivalent inland suburb.

- Establish the site's actual exposure level — direct frontal exposure and a sheltered coastal suburb are very different briefs.
- Specify corrosion-appropriate fixings and hardware for any structure, not just salt-tolerant planting.
- Plan windbreak or shelter planting as an early stage, since it protects everything planted after it.
- Get soil assessed for both drainage rate and nutrient retention before finalising a planting or irrigation plan.
- Check for any dune, erosion or coastal setback rules that may apply to the specific property.

It varies with wind exposure and topography, not just straight-line distance — a site directly in an onshore wind path can be affected further inland than a sheltered site much closer to the water.
Do all coastal gardens need irrigation?
Established, well-chosen coastal-tolerant planting can perform well with minimal irrigation once established, but the establishment period itself usually needs consistent watering given how quickly sandy soil drains.
Is stainless steel always necessary for coastal fixings?
Not universally, but it's worth specifying for anything exposed and hard to access for maintenance or replacement — the extra upfront cost is usually cheaper than early hardware failure.
