An elevated Quail Rise property drops close to two metres from the living area toward the boundary, with strong exposure to wind and, through winter, meaningful snow load on any exposed surface. Rather than one large elevated deck fully open to the weather, the brief resolves the level change with a smaller deck close to the house, partly sheltered by the building itself, stepping down to a lower gravel terrace used mainly through the warmer months. Substructure and balustrade requirements are engineered to account for snow load given the site's elevation, and a simple screen is added on the windward side so the upper deck earns genuine use across more of the year, including on cold but clear alpine days, rather than sitting unused through winter.
